Property Taxes Are Due April 10: Pay Online to Avoid Penalties

04/04/19

San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded property owners today that they have just six days left to pay the second installment of their 2018-2019 property taxes before they are charged a late penalty.

Taxpayers can quickly and easily pay their bills online at sdttc.com. They will not be charged a convenience fee if they pay be e-check, or electronic check.

“So far, 35% of taxpayers have paid $1.1 billion in second installment payments,” said McAllister, “but all tax bills are due on April 10, and we don’t want anyone to have to pay a 10% penalty plus $10 fee for being even a minute late.”

Online payments will be accepted until midnight on April 10. Taxpayers should log on early and give themselves plenty of time to complete a payment before the automatic midnight cutoff.

McAllister announced his office is doing things a bit differently during this collection period.

“We will no longer offer the drive-thru at our main branch downtown that allowed people to drop off property tax payments,” said McAllister. “We hope that instead, they will save themselves a drive and pay their taxes online.”

As fewer people pay in-person each year, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office (TTC) has seen a growth in online payments. Now, 60% of taxpayers pay electronically through sdttc.com or an impound account.

Payments can also be made by phone at 855-829-3773 or in person by visiting any of the five branch offices. Mail payments must be postmarked April 10 to be considered on time. If your lender is supposed to pay your property tax bill, lenders generally submit payments just before the delinquent date. Please contact them to confirm that they have scheduled the payment.

In September, the TTC sent out 998,298 tax bills, which are expected to generate $6.49 billion for the County of San Diego. Property taxes fund schools, libraries and other services provided by local cities and the county. Click here to see how taxes are allocated.
